Namibia is gearing up for its most contentious election since independence, with the ruling SWAPO party's candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah hopeful of becoming the country's first female president.
Namibia 's interim President Nangolo Mbumba greeted presidential candidate Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah from the ruling SWAPO party at a rally in Windhoek ahead of the upcoming elections. SWAPO has been in power since leading Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. If she wins, Nandi-Ndaitwah would become the country's first female president . However, political analysts predict that issues like high unemployment, inequality, and corruption could sway the election.
The most significant challenge, according to Henning Melber, an associate at The Nordic Africa Institute and a former SWAPO member, could be the potential loss of the ruling party's longtime loyalty. The opposition is led by dentist-turned-politician Panduleni Itula, who finished second in the last election in 2019. Namibia, a country of around 3 million people, has approximately 1.4 million registered voters
