The Conservative party chairman says that the dispute with the tax authorities came as a result of an error and he was not trying to avoid tax

after Mr Zahawi’s dispute with the tax authorities was resolved when he agreed to pay around £5m in late taxes and payments, but Labour has called on him to quit.

Mr Zahawi, who is paid by the taxpayer and sits in the Cabinet as a minister without portfolio as well as his party chairman post, said in a statement on Saturday that HMRC had “disagreed about the exact allocation” of shares in polling firm YouGov that he and his father held. He added: “They concluded that this was a ‘careless and not deliberate’ error. So that I could focus on my life as a public servant, I chose to settle the matter and pay what they said was due.”, when Mr Zahawi was briefly Chancellor of the Exchequer under Boris Johnson. The minister sought to keep the details private over a period of several months.

By the time Mr Sunak took office in October, he was told by officials in the Cabinet Office that there were no further concerns about Mr Zahawi’s personal affairs that would be an obstacle to appointing him as a minister. He was not aware of the details of the tax dispute beyond what was publicly reported.

He added: “People’s taxes are private matters. I know that as politicians we, quite rightly, are expected to have a higher level of disclosure than perhaps other people might do. Nadhim has issued a statement where he has admitted that he made a careless error, that this is now resolved.”
