Zahawi, who found time to write his autobiography while serving as a Cabinet minister, has amassed substantial wealth during a career as a digital market research pioneer and oil strategist
It is a story of financial acumen – albeit questioned of late by the revelation of a tax error and an alleged penalty payment to HMRC – chronicled in the Parliament register of interests and other repositories of financial data in Britain and beyond, including Companies House. According to multiple estimates, the net wealth of Mr Zahawi and his family is put at between £30m and £100m.
Mr Zahawi stepped down as a director of the company in January 2018. Companies House now lists his wife, Lana Saib, as the controlling shareholder, while his twin sons Ahmad and Jaafar Shanshal are listed as the property investment firm’s only other directors. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing and Mr Zahawi has repeatedly insisted that he has always complied with the requirements of the register of MPs’ interests and the ministerial code.
