In 2018 and 2019, videos showing white Carroll students chanting the n-word went viral. It prompted a broader conversation about racism across Southlake, and the district formed a council of more than 60 parents, students and staff to work on a plan for action.
A vocal group of families rallied against those ideas, crowding into heated board meetings for months and accusing the district of promoting a “left-wing agenda” and creating “diversity police.” One of the Black students involved in the complaint said he has been called the n-word and a “porch monkey.” According to the complaint, he was ostracized by other students for reporting the harassment.
Other complainants faced harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and identity, according to the LDF’s summary. These incidents went beyond verbal abuse and resulted in physical violence, the group alleges.
