Nova Scotia Health Authority's president is promising Hants County residents the provincial government is not planning on closing the Windsor hospital despite frequent emergency room (ER) closures last summer.

Karen Oldfield, right, the president and CEO of the Nova Scotia Health Authority, said she sees great potential in expanding the operating room services at the Hants Community Hospital in Windsor, as well as looking for ways to further enhance the offerings in West Hants. - Carole Morris-UnderhillWINDSOR, N.S.

“Dr. Sam Campbell is a real champion for that ER and I know for a fact that he leaves no stone unturned trying to find people to cover the ER,” she said. “So on the radar, understand the urgency, we will do our very best.” Zebian, along with several West Hants Regional Municipality councillors, attended the Oct. 19 meeting to hear about the health care plans for the area.

Oldfield and Jeannine Lagassé, the provincial deputy minister for the Department of Health and Wellness, fielded questions. Lagassé said they’ve been listening to health-care workers about the challenges they face in the existing system and said they are trying to find solutions. “I’m concerned about the emergency care in the community. If the emerg department is closed, there needs to be some access, some way, that people can get somewhere else,” the resident said, noting that during the summer, both Cobequid Community Health Centre in Sackville and Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville were at, or over, capacity.

“A recruited position or other health-care professional wants to feel that this is a place they could put down roots,” she said.
