Hants and Kings county firefighters worked to extinguish a fire that occurred in an outbuilding that spread into the nearby woods July 24. - Adrian JohnstoneFALMOUTH, N.S. — Sunday’s heat wave put an additional layer of pressure on firefighters as they battled a Falmouth garage fire that had started to spread to the nearby woods.
The one-storey garage was about 20-feet by 24-feet in size. Lavers said it contained a snowblower, small lawn tractor, lumber, and a few miscellaneous tools. The garage, which wasn’t insured, couldn’t be salvaged. “The big challenge would have been overcoming the high heat and humidity levels and just trying to get lines around the fire to prevent the fire spread due to the large involvement of the structure upon first arrival,” said Lavers.
“Because of the high heat, firefighters were getting exhausted and just couldn’t rehab in time to go back to work so we called in extra fire departments for manpower to assist us,” said Lavers. One firefighter was transported to the hospital due to heat stress injuries, Lavers said. That firefighter was later released.
“It wasn’t a huge wooded area,” said Lavers, noting the initial concern was possible fire extension to neighbouring properties.
