Five companies have agreed to pay as much as $20.1 billion to states and local governments nationwide.

“A majority of the settlement money is designated for abatement and remediation use, including prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery services,” the state said.and county and municipal governments nationwide will need to agree to the proposed terms of the settlement agreements,” the state said.
The involved states were sent the five agreements with signing deadlines in 2022, and once a state signs on, its eligible municipalities will receive the agreements to sign during the first quarter of 2023, the state said. The settlements with the pharmacy chains resolve allegations that they helped fuel the opioid epidemic “by ignoring red flags that prescriptions were being diverted into illegal trafficking,” the state said. As part of the settlements, the companies have agreed to monitor, report and share data about “suspicious activity” related to opioid prescriptions.
