“I must thank the overwhelming majority of students, parents, administrators, educators, and support staffers who have worn their masks without problem or protest since our schools reopened for in-person learning,” Murphy said when he announced the move. “Thankfully, we have reached a point where we feel confident that we can take another step toward normalcy for our kids.”

Murphy issued his first public health emergency in March 2020 and the state was under other health emergency orders for several months after Murphy made an agreement with the Legislature to keep some measures in place. But he reinstated the latest round of orders in January after lawmakers refused to extend them.
