A total of 16 people have tested positive for the bacterial infection, six of whom have been hospitalized, the CDC said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a Salmonella outbreak that has left at least 16 people ill in four states, including New Jersey.

The cases were confirmed between late April and mid-June, according to the latest data. The CDC said the actual number of Salmonella cases is likely much higher, since many patients recover from the illness without medical care and are never tested. Several patients reported eating 80% lean ground beef purchased from Shoprite supermarket locations in New Jersey, New York or Connecticut before getting sick, according to the CDC.
