A longtime Democratic political operative — and the former chief of staff to the state Senate president — pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges in a scheme to defraud campaigns and political action committees in New Jersey by over-billing them, federal officials announced. Antonio “Tony” Teixeira, 43, of Elizabeth pleaded guilty before a U.S. District Court judge in Newark to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of tax evasion, New Jersey U.S. Attorney Phillip Sellinger said in a statement.

Teixeira conspired with another political consultant, Sean Caddle, and Caddle’s firms to defraud various political campaigns, political action committees, and tax-exempt social welfare organizations of $107,800 from 2014 to 2018, authorities said, citing documents and statements made in court.
