A 66-year-old New Jersey man and two others were killed in an avalanche while climbing a mountain in Washington state on Sunday, authorities said.
The New Jersey resident was among six people attempting to climb Colchuck Peak when the lead climber triggered the avalanche at about 1 p.m., theFour climbers were swept 500 feet down the couloir — a step narrow gully — with three being killed. In addition to the New Jersey man, a 60-year-old New York woman and a 53-year-old Connecticut man are presumed dead.
The sheriff’s office said 22 recovery workers responded, but avalanche conditions were too dangerous to continue looking for the hikers. The workers also couldn’t search on Tuesday due to continued weather hazards.reported the officials hope to resume the recovery mission partially by air Thursday or Friday when skies clear and winds diminish. The climbers were part of a New York-based hiking group, according to the Seattle Times.
