This would help make up for a boost in federal emergency pandemic-era assistance that's about to end.

Gov.on Wednesday signed a law that raises the minimum benefit low-income households in the state can receive under the federal Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program — or SNAP — from $50 to $95.

The increase in the program — formerly known as food stamps — matches the temporary boost the U.S. government has had in place the last few years,Murphy said the state acted because the expiration of the federal increase will leave “a significant gap” in families’ food budgets and put thousands of families “at risk of becoming food insecure.

“After coming together to overcome the pandemic, there can be no greater purpose that every family in New Jersey has enough to eat,” the Democratic governor said before signing the lawEach family’s allotment will depend on its household size and income, but this ensures families will receive at least $95 a month, Murphy said. New Jersey is the first state to set an across-the-board minimum benefit, officials said.

SNAP has injected $3 billion into the state’s economy since 2020, according to Lisa Pitz, director of the nonprofit Hunger Free New Jersey.
