Liam Newman, 17, of Frenchtown, died in a car accident in the early morning hours on New Year's Day, police say.

To those who knew Liam Newman — a Frenchtown 17-year-old and senior at Delaware Valley Regional High School — say he loved to hang out by the river near his hometown, and to work out with friends. Those closest to him, including fellow members and coaches of the school’s wrestling and lacrosse teams, say the early morning, New Year’s Day car accident that claimed his life has left them with a crippling loss.

“We have spoken about Liam each day in practice and will do a few things to remember Liam at our home matches this week,” Fitz said. “We are also in awe of the entire [school] community in regards to how much love and support they have given the Newman family and the students of Delaware Valley,” Fitz said.

“Liam had worked very hard the past year off the field and in the weight room, developing himself into a better athlete and a fine young man. We looked forward to his possible return this spring,” Niebuhr said. “At this time, my thoughts and prayers are with the Newman family and the students of Delaware Valley. Our community’s support for the Newman family has been overwhelmingly positive and something that makes me so proud to say that ‘we are Del Val.
