Over the past few months, coalition governments across South Africa have been imploding spectacularly. The situation is especially pronounced in the metros where the Democratic Alliance constituted minority governments following the local government elections in November 2021. Prior to these elections, the African National Congress was governing three metros with an outright majority. These included the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.
