Revered South African match officials Victor Gomes and Zakhele Siwela have been selected to officiate at the Fifa World Cup in Qatar later this year
The duo, who handled the Afcon final when Senegal beat Egypt in the continental championships in Cameroon in February, are part of 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video assistant match officials named by the Fifa referees committee on Thursday.
The trio also forms part of CAF’s representatives that include Bakary Gassama of Gambia, Mustapha Ghorbal , Maguette N’Diaye and Salima Mukansanga .The committee, headed by the legendary retired referee Pierluigi Collina, also included six women match officials, a first in the men’s World Cup tournament history.
The women’s list has centre referees Stéphanie Frappart from France and Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan, as well as assistants Neuza Back , Karen Díaz Medina and Kathryn Nesbitt . “The 2018 World Cup was successful partly because of the high standard of refereeing, and we will do our best to be even better in a few months in Qatar,” said Collina in a media release circulated by the world football governing body on Thursday.
