According to the orchestra’s CEO, Bongani Tembe, “an important mission of the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra is to harness the skills of young and talented South African orchestral players and help chart a clear career path for them”.

As schools reopen following the winter recess, music faculties of 12 universities across seven provinces will receive their share of R3 million of funding approved by the orchestra’s artistic planning committee. The committee met in June, following applications and appeals for help by various university music departments. Photo: Archivehe Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra has just announced a new funding allocation in support of university music faculties across the country.

Previously, the orchestra announced funding of various beneficiaries according to a six-tier system that included regional, youth and community orchestras, along with smaller music projects in communities across the country. For instance, last year, the Mzansi Philharmonic managed to raise and allocate about R20 million in grants. It saw the larger orchestras – Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg – each receiving about R3.

Among a number of requirements, applicants must demonstrate a much better-than-average aptitude on their principal instrument, as well as a strong interest in playing in an orchestra and a background of involvement in music-related activities. Another fellow is Kamogelo Maraba, who is currently an undergraduate at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, studying under Ben Davies. He is the former principal cellist of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

The orchestra comprises the cream of South African musicians who have earned a reputation for excellence and innovation in their fields.
