SuppliedThis week, the Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra will kick off their second national tour with the revitalising message and music of Austrian composer Gustav Mahler.
So, the tour is also a triumphant homecoming for Rangwanasha, who is the current BBC Radio 3 New Generation artist, winner of the Cardiff singer of the world award, and Daily Maverick’s artist of the year runner-up for 2022. Most notably, the tour sees the return of conductor Marin Alsop, who held the baton for Mzansi Philharmonic’s inaugural national tour in 2022. Alsop is the best possible choice of conductor, not only symbolic value during Woman’s Month. She is special because her late mentor, the great Leonard Bernstein, was one of the most consequential experts on the work of Mahler. Hence the orchestra set to connect South African audiences through the hand of Alsop to the grand Mahlerian tradition.
The symphony’s fourth movement is the gorgeous Adagietto for strings. It has often been misunderstood and misappropriated as a funerary dirge. The Rondo-Finale, which closes the monumental symphony, is a marvel of joyous Bachian counterpoint. It is arguably the best example of how tradition and fertile future possibilities were wonderfully nestled inside Mahler’s musical mind.
