With little hope of a cure, Howard made a brave choice
When Jackie Gillimore's husband Howard received the news he had a rare and complicated form of leukiaemia, the prognosis looked grim.
They planned trips away to the Lake District, Jersey, Bristol, Plymouth and the Dales, to create cherished memories with their family. Without the chemotherapy to extend his life, the family prepared for the worst, but in August 2019, three months after Howard received his diagnosis, his condition had remained stable.They turned to The Christie's haemotology department for a second opinion, and together fought to try a new drug, which was still unlicensed in the UK.
Jackie said: ""When lockdown was eased, we went to our caravan near Appletreewick in the Yorkshire Dales, which became our haven. We were able to see friends and family there, enjoying the outdoors, BBQs and some amazing sunsets. Howard's friends at the Clitheroe Bike Club organised a memorial ride to raise funds for The Christie. This sparked Jackie to follow her husband's spirit of adventure and embark on an outdoor challenge of her own. To honour Howard's memory and express gratitude to The Christie hospital, she decided to embark on the Dales 30 Challenge - climbing 30 hills/peaks in the Yorkshire and Cumbrian Dales - to raise funds for The Christie Charity.
