Hinish first met Hamlin in ninth grade at Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh. Hamlin, a year older, was a cornerback. Hinish was the defensive tackle. The two have remained friends. They currently share a trainer in Pittsburgh and have worked out together in the offseason. They text from time to time to catch up.

Jerry Hughes thought it just looked like a routine tackle, like the ones the defensive end had made when he was Hamlin’s teammate in Buffalo last season, like the thousands he’d seen defensive backs make all the time throughout his 13-year career. “But I don’t think anyone puts on pads with the intent of hurting anyone or puts on the pads with the intent that this is the last time they’re going to be able to do that. We understand it’s a game and we’re viewed as being these gladiators, but we’re still human. We know that we’ve got to just not take this for granted.”

Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field Monday, has a history with several Texans, who reflected on his battle for life.Jimmy Morrissey was watching the game in his apartment with Charlie Heck. The reserve offensive linemen thought Hamlin had suffered a concussion at first. Then, they saw the ambulance. Then, Morrissey was struck by the reaction of the players on the sideline.
