With no end to this war in sight, we cannot allow ourselves to feel Ukraine fatigue
This week, we will hold a moment’s silence to mark the first-year anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. It’s easy to mock such a show of support – “yeah, silence is nice, but what about some fighter jets?” – but impossible to overstate the significance of contemplating and commemorating this Friday; paying our respects to the fallen and the threatened in a European ally, a vital buffer between us and Russia.
A year ago, the invasion did not come as a surprise, but was still a shock. As the fascinating BBC seriesexplained, endless communications with the Russians left our leaders with the sinking realisation that the more Putin denied any intention of invading, the more obvious it was he would do so.
