The athlete is making her Winter Games debut in Beijing.

“It happened all really fast, and it’s really exciting,” Aravich tells SELF. “But [competing in both Games] definitely had its challenges with training along the way, taking optimal rest time, and also mentally bouncing back from having one Games experience.”in her preliminary heat with a time of 1:03.76 and didn’t move on to the finals.

“People just kind of have this sadness and this emptiness as soon as the Games are over because you’ve worked so long for this one event,” Aravich says. “Having had that experience, I think I’ll be more well-versed to help myself and to be there for some of my first-time teammates going into the Games, to help them understand that you’re going to feel the highs pretty high and the lows pretty low.

In addition to being a newcomer to the Paralympics in general, Aravich is also quite new to the winter sports in which she’ll be competing. A cross-country and track-and-field athlete through high school and college—she ran for Division I school Butler University—
