An activist asked Rep. Ilhan Omar if she would condemn female genital mutilation. Her response:
At a conference in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, a Muslim activist asked Rep. Ilhan Omar if she would condemn the medieval practice of female genital mutilation, or FGM, which is still in use among some groups today.
The Minnesota Democrat, clearly miffed by what she described as an “appalling” and “frustrating” question, responded with an ice-cold drubbing: ‘I am, I think, quite disgusted I think to be honest that as Muslim legislators, we are constantly being asked to waste our time speaking to issues that other people are not asked to speak to because ... the assumption exists that we somehow support and are for [the issue].’ Omar urged the audience, which applauded her answer, to ask “proper questions” of the sort that they would ask any other member of Congress.
“Does this need to be on repeat every five minutes?” she said. “Should I be like, so today I forgot to condemn al-Qaeda, so here’s the al-Qaeda one. Today I forgot to condemn FGM, so here we go. Today I forgot to condemn Hamas ... ” She went on to cite her stance against the “abhorrent” tradition by pointing to four bills she has voted for at state and federal levels.
