John Prine, legendary singer and songwriter, died Tuesday, 2 weeks after being hospitalized with COVID-19 symptoms.
April 8, 2020 -- and was intubated 2 days later, according to a family statement.
Prine, 73, launched his career in Chicago when a young Roger Ebert, who went on to become a legendary movie critic, discovered the 23-year-old. Ebert wrote a glowing review of a Prine show, and the singer-songwriter was on his way. He soon met singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson, and the two became friends for decades and were frequent tour partners.
In this past few decades, Prine began to return the favor that Kristofferson and others granted him when he was still and up-and-comer. He became mentors of sorts for young artists like Jason Isbell, Margo Price and, most recently, Sturgill Simpson. Best known for songs like “Hello in There,” “In Spite of Ourselves,” and “Lake Marie,” his best-known work might be “Angel from Montgomery,” which Bonnie Raitt made famous.and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. He won a Grammy in 2005 for best contemporary folk album, and was nominated nine other times.WebMD Health News Brief
