Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday that New Jersey’s beaches and lakes will open next Friday — but with some restrictions

Gov. Phil Murphy said Thursday that New Jersey’s beaches and lakes will open — but with some restrictions — next Friday, just in time for the start of the Memorial Day weekend, a massive economic driver for the state’s economy.

Murphy said there will be limits on how many people can be on a beach at one time and that it will be up to individual towns to set those limits and to enforce social distancing policies. The governor also urged visitors to the state’s beaches or lakes to wear face coverings, but said they would not be required.

The reopening comes weeks after New Jersey, which has the second most Covid-19 cases in the country, saw its caseload and hospitalizations peak. The state reported 1,216 newly-diagnosed positive coronavirus cases on Thursday, for a total of 142,704 since the first known diagnosis in early March. Another 244 deaths have been attributed to the virus for a total of 9,946. More than half of the deaths — 5,168 — have been at long-term care facilities.

“Governor Murphy may want to look at a calendar,” Testa said in a statement Tuesday. “Memorial Day is almost here and our tourism-dependent economy will be hit extra hard for every day beyond then that he forces our community to stay locked down.”
