Nearly a quarter of the reported crimes in the region are offenses against people, from assault to robbery to murder. Property crimes account for 58 percent of reported crimes
Crime reported in San Diego County — including murder, robbery and car theft — dropped during the first half of this year compared to the same six-month stretch last year, data released this week show. The drop came across the board, from violent crimes such as murder — 44 reported from January to June this year, compared to 53 in the same time frame last year — to property crimes such as theft, to societal crimes such as drugs and gambling. Crimes against people were down 6 percent.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria lauded the drop in crime rates, pointing out that reports of crimes against people in the city dropped 7 percent this year over last, and crimes involving property also dropped 7 percent in the city. He also noted that the region's crime numbers have slid post-pandemic. San Diego 'remains one of the safest big cities in America,' Gloria said Thursday during his monthly media briefing.
