Queen Elizabeth II dedicated the world-famous International Departures Lounge at Gander International Airport during the Royal Visit in 1959—a tour that also took her to Corner Brook.“She’s performed her role with dignity, poise, strength, passion, resilience and an undying commitment to duty.”Bonavista Mayor John Norman says the Queen’s visit as part of Cabot 500 celebrations in 1997 marked the beginning of the town’s rejuvenation.
“She was there before a lot of the exciting work that’s happened since had even begun,” he says. “It was just only then being conceived,” in and around the Cabot 500 celebrations. Norman was just 12-years-old during the Queen’s last visit to Newfoundland, but was privileged to join her for a luncheon on that cold, wet day.
Norman, who has worked with King Charles through the Prince’s Trust, is looking forward to seeing how Charles, who is an outspoken environmentalist and heritage advocate, will bring change to the Monarchy. It will be something altogether new and different says Norman with King Charles’ heritage and climate interests.
