Municipal building closed for repairs after man broke in, started fires yyc yyccc
Police said they were called to city hall around 4 p.m. for reports of a man brandishing a weapon and setting fire to multiple areas of the building.
The man was known to police as a client of the Police and Crisis Team, which responds to vulnerable individuals with mental-health and addictions issues. Speaking to reporters Tuesday afternoon near the site of the break-in, Mayor Jyoti Gondek said only some security staff were in the building at the time of the incident, and neither they nor responders to the scene sustained any injuries. No personal or sensitive documents or information were accessed.
“As a municipal building, we have to be as accessible to the public as possible. We try very hard to offer that kind of service. At the same time, what we’re seeing is our security staff are sometimes being put into high alert because we are such an accessible building, and people who use drugs, who may be in a situation of distress, rely on them to come and help them.
Acting city manager Carla Male said officials are still assessing the extent of the damage, with no cost estimate immediately available, while the city is activating its business continuity plans to continue offering some services.Article content
