'I tried stopping his daytime nap and it made no difference'
When it comes to establishing a bedtime routine for your little one, no doubt every parent's experience is different. Some will go out like a light, but some will seem like they want to go all night.
Bedtime went from taking a short half an hour between 7pm and 8pm with wash, pyjamas, and a couple of books and then sleep to full-scale gymnastics over the course of two or sometimes even three hours and finishing as late as 11pm. But he was still waking at 7am or 8am, so he wasn't getting anywhere near the amount of sleep he needed.
I fell into using "bad" sleep habits with him. He would almost always fall asleep watching the short The Gruffalo movie on my phone – this was my last resort when I just needed an easy bedtime routine that would take less than an hour. It soon stopped working. This dramatic crying was quickly cured by a bowl of cereal and some milk. By 7pm he was in the shower and by 7.10pm was dressed in pyjamas. Throughout this process I made a point of telling him what was happening, using phrases like "time to put the toys away, bye bye toys", "supper time," "time for a shower," and "bedtime now".
