MultiChoice's anti-piracy arm, Irdeto , has joined forces with the Western Cape Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit to successfully execute three targeted enforcement operations against content piracy within the province over the past three months. These operations, the company states, demonstrate the unwavering commitment of MultiChoice, Irdeto , and law enforcement agencies to dismantle piracy networks and prevent unauthorized access to DStv content.
Individuals apprehended during these raids face serious charges, including money laundering, copyright infringement, and cybercrime offences. The first of these raids took place in Wellington on January 28th, in collaboration with the Wellington South African Police Services (Saps). Authorities apprehended a suspect for alleged unauthorized content distribution. A few weeks later, in November 2024, a joint operation led by authorities supported by the Western Cape Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit was conducted in Maitland, Cape Town. One suspect was arrested during the raid, accused of engaging in illegal streaming operations. The investigation remains ongoing. In another operation, MultiChoice reported that a team apprehended a man suspected of selling smart TV boxes pre-installed with applications that grant unauthorized access to DStv content. Authorities seized 12 smart TV boxes, a USB drive, and a Huawei P20 smartphone from the suspect's premises. MultiChoice emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the company, Irdeto, and law enforcement agencies in safeguarding intellectual property and ensuring the broadcasting industry's security against illegal operators. The company announced a new partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in November 2024. This collaboration, they believe, will elevate enforcement efforts and dedication to tackling pirate streaming services while protecting the media landscape. Frikkie Jonker, Irdeto's director of Broadcast and Cybersecurity, praised the Western Cape Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit's commitment to combating broadcasting piracy.
