Mueller’s report says Trump reacted to his appointment by saying it was the 'end of his presidency'
Public at last, special counsel Robert Mueller’s report revealed to a waiting nation Thursday that President Donald Trump had tried to seize control of the Russia probe and force Mueller’s removal to stop him from investigating potential obstruction of justice by the president.
The Justice Department posted a redacted version of the report online Thursday morning, 90 minutes after Attorney General William Barr offered his own final assessment of the findings. On possible obstruction, 10 episodes scrutinized by Mueller also include Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey and efforts to encourage witnesses not to co-operate.
Barr selectively redacted parts of the report, using colour-coded justifications for doing so. Redacted sections include: where no redaction might cause harm to an ongoing matter; where it might harm personal privacy; where it might reveal an investigative technique; and where it might affect the workings of a Grand Jury.
Barr disclosed that he let the president’s personal lawyer see the report in advance of its delivery to Congress at 11 a.m. with “limited redactions.” The White House didn’t request that additional material be withheld and there were no redactions based on executive privilege, Barr said.— Donald J. Trump April 18, 2019The attorney general also said that Russians didn’t have the “knowing assistance” of any Americans in their interference in the 2016 campaign.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement that the only way to restore public trust after Barr’s “regrettably partisan handling” of the report was for Mueller to testify “as soon as possible” before Congress. — Asha Rangappa April 18, 2019However, Mueller said his probe didn’t “exonerate” Trump on the question of whether he obstructed the investigation, according to Barr’s summary. Rather, Mueller said he found evidence “on both sides of the question.”
