MPs on all sides seeking answers from Google on why the internet giant blocked 1.2 million Canadians from access to Canadian news sources were unanimous Friday in expressing dissatisfaction over the tech giant’s responses.

Google Canada’s Sabrina Geremia, Vice President and Country Manager, appears via videoconference as a witness at a Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Monday, March 6, 2023.

Sabrina Geremia, Google’s vice-president and country manager for Canada, told the Canadian Heritage committee that the company has “very serious problems” with Bill C-18, which is back in the House of Commons after Senate amendments. She said the bill “threatens the value of journalism in Canada.” The bill calls on digital news intermediaries, including Google, “to enhance fairness in the Canadian digital marketplace and contribute to its sustainability,” as well as agreements with news businesses, and taking into account freedom of expression and journalistic independence.
