NDP and Conservative MPs today told Hockey Canada president Scott Smith it was time for him to resign as it works to address a culture change around sexual assault. 'I strongly believe that there needs to be new leadership on Hockey Canada,' one said.

PublishedLawyer Andrew Winton sits alongside witnesses Scott Smith, Hockey Canada president and chief operating officer, and Hockey Canada chief financial officer Brian Cairo, as they appear at the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage in Ottawa on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, looking into how Hockey Canada handled allegations of sexual assault and a subsequent lawsuit.

Hockey Canada president Scott Smith faced a flurry of strongly worded statements from MPs who said they had little confidence in his ability to lead the national organization as it works to address a culture change around sexual assault. In a House of Commons heritage committee meeting examining how the organization handles sexual assault allegations on Wednesday, members learned the organization has used $7.6 million from its “national equity fund” to settle claims around sexual assault since 1989. Roughly $287,000 of that was paid to the law firm Henein Hutchison LLP to look into a 2018 group sexual assault allegation.

That 2018 incident, which Henein Hutchison has been contracted as a third party to investigate, involves a woman who said she was the victim of a sexual assault committed by eight hockey players, including some members of the 2018 world junior team, after a Hockey Canada gala in a London, Ont. Hockey Canada hired the firm after it learned of the alleged assault, and London police launched a criminal investigation shortly after.
