It is also testing new technologies to support its response to oil spills.

MPA's oil spill contractors deploying oil booms around the bunker tanker, as part of the joint oil spill exercise on Oct 11.Technicians using a laser gun to remove oil stains from a marine slab, at One Degree 15 Marina on Oct 10.

The operators then deployed their company-owned craft to spray dispersants – chemicals that break oil up into smaller droplets, so that they can be mixed with water – to support MPA’s patrol craft at the exercise site. Additionally, protective booms were laid out by several operators to facilitate clean-up operations and reduce disruptions to operations. Protective booms are floating barriers that trap oil, and in turn, control its spread.

The oil spill on June 14 was caused by a collision between Netherlands-flagged dredging boat Vox Maxima and stationary Singapore-flagged bunker vessel Marine Honour at Pasir Panjang Terminal on, resulting in 400 tonnes of fuel leaking into the sea. By analysing different materials’ unique light reflections or absorption patterns, these cameras can help detect weathered oil floating beneath the water’s surface and possibly allow night surveillance operations, added MPA.
