Mozambique: Refugees Begin Returning Home as Violence Lulls

Following a week of relative calm, residents of Mozambique's Morrumbala district, Zambezia province, have returned home after fleeing to Malawi due to post-election violence. Authorities are working towards peace and security to facilitate the return of the remaining refugees and address the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in refugee camps.

Zambezia , Mozambique ’s second-largest province, is seeing the return of some of the 2 000 residents who fled to neighbouring Malawi due to Local authorities report that about 200 of them have returned following a brief lull in violent protests experienced over the past few days. Following a week of relative calm, residents of Mozambique ’s Morrumbala district in Zambezia province have returned home.

Authorities there have expressed gratitude to their Malawian neighbors for hosting the refugees who fled the post-election violence. To facilitate the return of the remaining 1 800 refugees, authorities have pledged to work towards peace and security and ensure a return to normalcy. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions for those who fled the violence. Similar conditions were reported in Estwani, Mozambique’s southern neighbor, where over 1,000 refugees are being housed in a center designed to accommodate only 250 people. Meanwhile, Tanzanian authorities report that, so far, no Mozambican nationals fleeing violence have crossed the border into the country.However, with no agreement in place between the disputing parties in Mozambique, peace and the return of over 3,000 reported refugees remains uncertain., who claims he won the country’s election, has repeatedly stated that he intends to be sworn in on January 15. This date has been set aside to swear in the ruling party’s Daniel Chapo, who was declared the winner of the country’s election
