Tropical Cyclone Idai has wrought devastation across southern Africa.

People stand on a bank of the Buzi river for help as South Africa's disaster relief organisation Gift of the Givers delivers relief supplies along the river after the area was hit and isolated by the Cyclone Idai near Estaquinha, about 80km west from Beira, Mozambique, March 26, 2019.

"But after two days, it snapped," said Isabel Bernard, 20, a survivor of the storm's aftermath who had been clinging to the tree branch along with her son. Still exhausted by the trauma she suffered, the young mother struggled to recount the situation that unfolded earlier this month when the river Buzi burst its banks and she was forced to flee her home.
