Vendor says it can't provide supplies at tendered cost

REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach/Illustration/File Photo Supplying town facilities with washroom paper in Mount Pearl is costing the city a little but more these days. Council recently approved an increase of $34,000 to the contract it has with a vendor to reflect the rising costs.MOUNT PEARL, N.L. — A bit more taxpayer money in Mount Pearl is going toward washroom paper at city facilities.

Coun. Bill Antle, who presented the motion on behalf of the recreation and community safety committee, said they had been informed by the vendor it could not provide the service to the city for the price that had been set when the tender was signed in 2020 and it was losing money by selling it to the city at that price. The vendor cited the increased cost since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Antle said, as the reason for the increase.

More than one councillor asked why the city could not hold the contractor to the price that had been set in the tender in 2020 and the implications of approving the increase. “We've only got a certain amount of a budget to operate within as a city, we all know that, and it’s very challenging each year to try to come up with a balanced budget and so it’s very difficult going forward to know where we stand on this because it could be a precedent-setting thing here with companies bidding on these tenders,” Rice said.
