In April, radio stations nationwide make changes in programming and bring in new presenters.

A group of Motsweding FM listeners marched to the station in Mmabatho, Mahikeng, on Thursday, demanding the station manager be removed because of his “purging” of Setswana employees.

Makhuduga Mosenogi, spokesperson for the Oupa Matla Foundation, which organised the march, said station manager Katlego Mokhele was not only “purging” Setswana speaking workers from the station, but was no longer preserving or respecting Setswana as its “sole mandatory broadcasting language”. Community radio stations are there to address dialects, however Motsweding FM as a public radio broadcaster has a mandate to broadcast in Setswana, not only for entertainment but for edutainment as well,” said Mosenogi.Protestors accused Mokhele of head hunting TV personalities for a radio job.

Protestors also wanted a forensic investigation into decisions made during Mokhele’s time as station manager. Veteran broadcaster Snyman Rankane should be appointed as acting station manager until the forensic audit was concluded, said the protestors. The acting SABC regional manager in North West, Raymond Makgopa, received the memorandum on behalf of the public broadcaster and said he would deliver it to management at Auckland Park.
