A Rhode Island motorist, flashing a sign that he had an explosive device in his car, led Maine State Police on a chase Monday to the Canadian border.
At 10:39 a.m., a state trooper tried to stop the car driven by Tony Holford, 42, as he drove northbound on Interstate 95. He continued up the road, Maine State Police said in a statement.
The trooper, Denver Roy, noticed a sign in Mr. Holford’s car that said a bomb was inside. Mr. Holford continued to drive up I-95 until he reached the border crossing between Houlton, Maine, and Woodstock, Canada. Mr. Holford stopped between the two ports of entry and was ordered by law enforcement to exit. After Mr. Holford instead moved his car toward the Canadian side of the border, Maine State Police Cpl. Eric Paquette fired a warning shot.
The shot did not injure Mr. Holford, who surrendered to law enforcement and who was taken to Aroostook County Jail in Houlton on charges of aggravated reckless conduct, terrorizing and failure to stop.• Brad Matthews can be reached at
