A motorist driving a white Volkswagen Golf R was arrested for exceeding the speed limit by 89km/h in Limpopo, South Africa. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers of speeding on the country's roads.

A motorist driving a white Volkswagen Golf R was arrested for speeding by members of the Limpopo department of transport and community safety on Tuesday. The motorist was clocked at 209km/h in a 120km/h zone. This incident brings the total number of motorists arrested for excessive speeding in the province to six since December 1, 2024. The provincial authorities have cautioned motorists against speeding, stating that speeding will not be tolerated on their roads.

A message to all residents, visitors, and holidaymakers is that speeding will not be tolerated on our roads. The severe consequences of speeding far outweigh any perceived benefits. We urge all road users to exercise caution and always adhere to speed limits to avoid devastating road crashes. IOL reported that special attention will be focused on South Africa’s most dangerous roads. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, who launched the 2024 campaign, said road crashes cost the South African economy R205 billion last year. A total of 11,883 road fatalities took place in 2023, of which 1,285 occurred over the festive season, which traditionally sees a spike in road accidents. These statistics are sobering. The number of road crashes and the impact on our people and our country is a tragic story of death and destruction, year in and year out. Behind every statistic is a story – a life lost, a family left grieving, or often there is a person dealing with life-changing injuries. The minister said her department was working alongside the Road Traffic Management Corporation as well as the relevant provincial and municipal departments to ensure a safer festive season in 2024
