Laquita Lewis enters court for her arraignment, Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in Houston. Lewis is accused in the slaying of her daughter, Fredricka Allen, on Sunday. Her attorney says Lewis"doesn't seem well" and is being examined for mental health issues. inside a northwest Harris County apartment pleaded guilty to her murder and was sentenced to spend up to 40 years in prison, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
Lewis had been facing a capital murder charge, which carries a possible death sentence, according to court records. The charge was reduced to murder as part of the plea deal. Lewis herself was not at the apartment when authorities arrived. She had left the apartment and got into a minor car crash at Interstate 10 and Loop 610, to which the Houston Police Department responded.
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg called the child's death"almost incomprehensible," and she credited her office's Mental Health Division for bringing the case to its conclusion without causing Lewis' family more pain.
