“Institutions, governments, businesses, sometimes they make a lot of effort trying to come up with, I guess we could call it a politically correct approach, to passing on greetings. It seems a strong majority tend to just use Merry Christmas,” said Andrew Enns, an executive vice-president at Leger. Nearly one-quarter said the list of public holidays should be expanded to include other religions and cultures, while six per cent said no religious-based holidays, including Christmas and Easter, should be public holidays. Younger respondents, those between 18 and 34 years old, were the least attached to keeping the Christmas season as it is — 38 per cent of the youngest group wanted to keep it unchanged, compared to 69 per cent of the oldest group, aged 55 and over.
Older Canadians, women, and those in Eastern Canada were more likely to identify as having Christian heritage.
