Ontarians want politics out of their health care, and a system that works for every person who needs care, at the time they need it.
We understand the instinct of the general public to not want their health-care system exposed to the whims of the free market. Anyone who isn’t sympathetic to that argument doesn’t have a heart. We know we need long-term care beds. According to the Conference Board of Canada, we need 200,000 more of them across the country by 2035. We know that Ontario alone is trying to reach 30,000 new beds, in addition to 28,000 replacement beds — a total of 58,000 beds. And these beds can’t come soon enough, with 40,000 Ontarians on the long-term care waitlist. Thankfully, the new beds are coming due to action by the provincial government to get shovels in the ground.
We know from Ontario’s COVID-19 Commission that the age of a long-term care home and the rate of viral infections in the surrounding community were the primary causative factors of severe outbreaks. Notably, the commission explicitly wrote, “The characterization of homes based on their tax status is not helpful,” and did not recommend removing private providers from the system.Article content
