SINGAPORE - Spine surgeons in the public and private sectors have seen a surge in the number of teenage girls needing surgical intervention to correct severe scoliosis, or curvature of the spine.

Jayna was informed of her scoliosis diagnosis in September 2022, but her condition worsened rapidly when her co-curricular activities took precedence and treatment was delayed until January.Chairman of the surgery division at the department of orthopaedic surgery at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital , Clinical Associate Professor Kevin Lim, said cases needing surgery have increased gradually over the years.

“This type of scoliosis progresses most rapidly during the growth spurt, hence one to two years can make a lot of difference if this coincides with the growth spurt of the child,” said Associate Professor Yue Wai Mun, an orthopaedic surgeon in private practice. Dr Yue said: “If the child with scoliosis is identified early and has the potential to progress to the stage where surgery is required, then he can start wearing a brace.

“First, we upgraded to a better scoliosis screening protocol in 2020 that resulted in a more accurate and timelier but larger number of such diagnoses.”NUH also saw pent-up demand in 2021 after the resumption of the scoliosis screening programme. Like his counterparts at public hospitals, Dr Yue saw the number of patients needing surgical intervention rise.

“I knew immediately that she needed the operation. At the same time, I was worried about what could potentially happen during her surgery,” the 57-year-old said.
