Animal welfare officials said they received a few dozen calls over the weekend from area residents reporting that there was a black bear roaming through yards, nosing into trash cans and eating from bird feeders.
Two more black bear sightings were reported in the D.C. region over the weekend, including one in Arlington and another on D.C.'s Roosevelt Island.
Young black bears roam between 10 to 20 square miles in search of food, shelter and a space to call their own, Trudeau said. Franklin probably swam from Roosevelt Island, where he was seen running across a trail, to Arlington where numerous residents have reported the fuzzy black bear roaming through yards, nosing into trash cans and eating from bird feeders.
“When a bear gets into an area that it’s unfamiliar with,” Trudeau said, “it can wander as it’s trying to find something that looks familiar.”But experts at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington and the National Park Service, which oversees Roosevelt Island, said they’re unsure that it’s Franklin. Paige Pearson, a spokeswoman for Virginia’s Department of Wildlife Resources, said she thinks it wasn’t Franklin, noting in an email, “It’s just bear season; they’re everywhere right now.”Seeing bears in Washington and its close-in suburbs tends to excite humans. But animal experts said there’s no increase in the bear population. It’s just that humans in a post-coronavirus world tend to work from home more and thereby see more wildlife, including bears.
