Rescue operations continue at the Stilfontein mine as authorities apprehend more illegal miners, known as 'zama zamas', in separate incidents. In the North West, 47 individuals have been arrested since Monday, while in Gauteng, six suspects were apprehended after a shootout with police.

Rescue operations are still ongoing at the site, with some miners resisting arrest by remaining underground in an attempt to evade capture.North West police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh confirmed that a total of 47 people have been apprehended since Monday, 23 December.The zama zamas are expected to appear in the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo explained that members of the national intervention unit were deployed to investigate. North West police have confirmed they were aware of the letter, stating there were many other similar letters from the miners asking for more food.
