18 U.S. Marines and 11 Republic of Korea Marines died during a training exercise in South Korea in March 1984
In a memorial garden on the northern end of Camp Pendleton, comrades are set to gather to dedicate a new monument. The monument remembers the sacrifice of 18 U.S. Marines and 11 Republic of Korea Marines who were killed when their Marine Corps CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter crashed during a night-time joint military training exercise in South Korea. The helicopter was one of six that took off from the Pohang Airfield on March 24, 1984, as part of the exercise called Team Spirit '84.
Jack Kelly, who later served as brigadier general, commanding officer of MCRD, San Diego. The Mangudai Warrior became the battalion's symbol, which hearkens back to the Mongol warriors led by Genghis Khan. The group talked about building a tribute to the fallen Team Spirit '84 Marines in the Fifth Marine Memorial Garden, which was not there at the time the accident happened.
