Algoma Public Health still recommends the monkeypox vaccine for people who are eligible
As the province considers declaring an end to the monkeypox outbreak, Algoma Public Health has still not declared a single case locally.
”We are very fortunate that when monkeypox arrived we already had a vaccine available and through quick actions of many different public health units, we were able to get people immunized, get information put to the groups that were most at risk and bring the cases down,” said Dr. John Tuinema, associate medical officer of health for Algoma.
“With it being such a small group, they are not very high numbers. I also suspect early on when the vaccine was only available in the most affected health units, many of those health units were offering the vaccine at pride events. It’s very likely many people in Algoma got their first dose there and, if they did, they are more than welcome to get their second dose at home in order to help to complete the series,” he said.
On Oct. 14, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore told media the number of cases was dwindling and the number of active cases in the province had peaked in mid-July
