World Health Organisation first raised concerns about the Monkeypox name following an outbreak in Europe this yearTHE MONKEYPOX virus will now officially be called Mpox to avoid “racist and stigmatising,” the World Health Organisation has announced.
However, mainstream media houses mainly published images of black people infected with the disease which was blasted byAt the time, scientists warned that there was an “urgent need” to tackle how the disease is known or run the risk of people equating monkeypox to the century’s long racist stereotyping of black people as monkeys. that “continued reference to and nomenclature of this virus being African is not only inaccurate but is also discriminatory and stigmatising”.
“In several public and private discussions, a number of individuals and nations voiced concerns and asked WHO to propose a path forward to alter the name.”
