Nobody is even pretending that this is about the spirit of competition or doing what’s right by the kids.
Staging a make-up tournament in the middle of the off-season, four months away from the next World Juniors, with players who haven’t played a game in two months, is about everyone getting paid. The IIHF, Hockey Canada, the broadcasters and the local hosts all need to fulfil their contractual obligations or face the financial consequences.
This isn’t that. A lot of the best players aren’t even coming. Aug. 9-20 is the heart of their off-season training schedule and they feel, rightly so, that the time would be better spent recovering from a season that didn’t end until late June and building strength for training camps in September. You have to feel for these kids. Through no fault of their own, they are now the public face of a deep-rooted scandal, left to answer questions about ugly incidents they had nothing to do with and be spokesmen for a governing body that failed everyone.Article content
