This revelatory exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery pulls together 21 paintings that have not seen together for generations
Aside from the occasional street name, or wharf long since given over to bars and cafes, the industrial past of London’s South Bank is now almost entirely obliterated.
The paintings have been hung broadly by subject across the Courtauld’s two exhibition galleries, but it is an intuitive arrangement that reveals the slight shifts in light and atmospheric conditions that intrigued Monet so much that he returned to London three times between 1899 and 1901. In fact, this particular picture was subjected to still more pollution, having been given to Winston Churchill in 1949, whose cigar smoke accrued in a further layer of yellow tar, now removed. It’s interesting to note too that the painting was in Churchill’s possession as he was overseeing the Clean Air Act of 1956, legislation that finally consigned “pea-soupers” to the past.
